Preface
This guide is to be used to instruct individuals on how to setup a Motorola V Series phone to check Google Gmail, which is Google’s free web-based email service. This does not give instuction on how to setup email for other email providers so you must check with them yourself.
Setup
These instructions are designed for use with a Motorola V Series phone, however they’ve been tested and proven on the following phones.
Motorola V400, V551, V557, RAZR V3, and V600
Instructions
Press the menu key
Go to Messages
Press the menu key
Go to “Email Msg Setup”
You are now viewing your POP3 email settings. They should be setup like listed below.
ISP settings: GPRS (most cell phone carriers no longer support CSD)
Email provider: Custom
Protocol: POP3
User ID: (your gmail user id)@gmail.com
Password: (your gmail password)
Sending host: smtp.googlemail.com
Sending port: 587 (this port is for SSL, port 465 will not work because that is for TSL)
Receiving host: pop.googlemail.com
Receiving port: 995
Return address: (your gmail user id)@gmail.com
Name: (your name or the name you would like other people to see when you send them email from the phone)
Cleanup: (how long before unlocked messages will be automatically deleted)
Save on server: No (even though Google actually does leave a copy on the server, you have to set it to no)
Notification: On (your phone will tell you when new mail arrives) Off (your phone won’t)
Check new msgs: (decide whether your phone will automatically check for new messages or not and how often if so)
Hide fields: (when composing emails decide if certain fields shall remain hidden)
Auto signature: (make a signature that will automatically be appended to the end of each email composed)
Security
Use SSL for sending: Yes
Use SSL for receiving: Yes
Warnings in Background: Break connection
Size restriction: 65535 (that’s the largest size email you can allow your phone to receive)
When you recieve a message that is too large for your phone to download it usually says “0 new messages, more messages available” The only work-around for this is to go to Settings > Forwarding and POP in your gmail account and enable pop “for mail that arrives from now on” (so your phone will skip the large message) or delete the large message instead of archiving it.
That’s it!
With those settings in place, you should be fully ready to check you Google Gmail from your Motorola V series phone. Be sure to enable POP3 access for your Gmail account at the website. Just simply go to Settings > Forwarding and POP to change the setting.
Any questions feel free to post a comment.
