My humanities project; “Humanities for Technology”
comment 2 Comments Written by Ronald on December 17, 2007 – 11:24 pm

After a day of critical thinking, I came up with a collaboration research community project that participants can benefit from. It’s called “Humanities for Technology.” OK so I’m starting off the project with my church, “NewBirth Charlotte”, I plan to target a certain part of my city w/ collaboration of an organization called “City Dive”, so basically I’m starting with the inner city, and growing out into other communities in my city. This will be a great introduction to my operating system Verdis, and will leave me with a handful of Verdis users. This project is to help teach the community computer skills. I don’t want this to be some lame computer class, I want participants to get a certificate they can be proud of, a certificate that can help them get a better job, a certificate that certifies them as a person with good computer ethics and skills.

Heres a little innie on the project: In today’s world computer and technology is everywhere, and almost every good job requires computer skills. The reason why, is that businesses find computers can organize and store important documents, and keep track of everything that goes on in there business, that means visual/ audio also! So they can keep track of what people do and say! So if something goes wrong, the bug or accident would be stored into the network database. Then the business could go back change modify and correct it. Since computers are getting more advance everyday this requires workers to take classes and courses to keep up with software. The world we live in is a place where computers even evolve and adapt to situations on there own in a human like way. A majority of people in the future could loose there jobs if they don’t keep up with computer skills, reason why is “genetic algorithms”, which are computer programs that can learn appropriate behavior, instead of having the behavior programmed in. So computers would be becoming more human like, being able to do computer task on their own. Including creativity! Scary eh?

What I want to do is setup a computer learning program for the community. I believe it is EXTREMELY important. I actually have the knowledge to share with many people, how to always be smarter than your computer. Skills that people will need, and won’t be different 5 years from now. Computer skills a person can hold on forever. Computer skills that can help a person in everyday computer task, computer skills to never need another computer technician or even ever have a virus on a computer again.

I want to setup a “Humanities for Technology” project. Personally I need a humanities to get admitted into “Penn State,” but I believe that the community can really benefit from this project. I can teach, I have great public speaking skills and knowledge. This would be a new era for the world and how we use computers. Recently I have developed a computer operating system called “Verdis,” based off Linux 2.6, the operating system is completely free and so is all the software. Everything in the operating system is free, and there are zero viruses to it. It’s highly stable and capable of everything Windows can do and so much more. It would be great if I could get this project started off by starting with the church and growing out the church teaching the community computer skills needed in todays world. In my lesson, I plan to teach more than word processing, I plan to teach how a computer works from BIOS to finish in detailed but simple explanation. Not only that, I will introduce web 2.0 networking which is becoming big in use by small businesses to large corporations, I believe I can offer those an opportunity the whole community can benefit from. I even taught HTML in my Computer Apps. 2 class at school, believe it or not, the teacher comes to me for help.

Humanities:
the quality of
being humane; kindness; benevolence.

Technology:

the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of
technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and
the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts,
engineering, applied science, and pure science.

I plan for this to be a completely free program that rewards
participants with a certificate, the certificate will represent that
they have learn and know and understand basic computer skills. The
user must pass a test given on the last day of “Humanities for
Technology.”

Objective;
Teach computer skills that can be applied to daily life and work. People will learn computer skills and knowledge required by most jobs. The
participants have the opportunity to learn basic computer skills
quickly. I plan the course to be two weeks long, only Monday’s and
Thursday’s. People who participate in”Humanities for Technology”
will achieve an advance level of basic computer skills, such as:

  • Using a computer BIOS

  • The computer Motherboard

  • Basic terminal and DOS commands

  • How the software interacts with computer hardware

  • Understanding the basic setup of a computer from hardware to software

  • Using certain file formats and packages

  • Using achieve compression

  • Word processing/ Presentations/ Database/ and Spreadsheet

  • Learn how the internet works

  • Learn basic HTML

  • Basic graphic design

  • Using a computer correctly

  • Learning Windows and Linux operating systems

  • Using the computer faster and effectively

  • Learning the mouse and keyboard

  • Correct typing

  • Using EMAIL; online vs. clients

  • Importance of updating software

Requirements
of Participants;
Participants
must be prepared to take notes, and learn.

Reward for “Humanities for Technology”;

An official certificate that notifies that a the person attended and
completed the “Humanities for Technology, which means the person
understands and knows the basics of properly using a computer
efficiently.
