AT&T has opened up a private beta of its new, hyper-visual web browser named Pogo. Yes, you read that right—AT&T is diving into the web browser market with a new creation of its own, based on Mozilla and 3D technology from Vizible, a Canada-based company that AT&T has invested in. The goal is to create a web browsing experience that is more robust than the crufty old browsers that we have all grown accustomed to. The software is not yet open to the public…

First off, Pogo is Windows-only, and AT&T makes no indication that it will be available for the Mac anytime soon (or ever). It requires Windows XP SP2 or later or Windows Vista, and its minimum hardware are surprisingly steep: a 1.6GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, and a video card with at least 256MB of VRAM. Seem like a bit much for a web browser? It is, and as I found out, these requirements posed some major challenges for us during our testing.
Installation

Upon installation, Pogo warns you if you’re attempting to install it on a machine with less than 256MB of VRAM but allows you to press ahead if you wish. If you don’t have 256MB of VRAM though, I don’t recommend that you take your chances—you’ll find yourself wishing you had a time machine so you could go back in time to before you loaded it up, and beat yourself unconscious.

Emulation? Forget about it. While the main portion of the application that displays web pages functioned (mostly) fine, anything that was even remotely “pretty” about Pogo would not display at all. This included parts of the UI and all of its functionality relating to bookmarks, history, springboards, and anything else. Since that’s how you use the browser, realize that this was not going to work.

Pogo’s UI is very different than most other web browsers—so different, in fact, that several of us found it difficult to figure out exactly how to do typical web-browsery things on it. It’s not very intuitive compared to other browsers, and uses different terminology for many things because they are displayed differently than in other browsers. For example, Pogo uses “cells” instead of tabs, although they function just like tabs. Cells are thumbnail-sized icons of the pages you have open that sit in a little dock bar underneath your current web page.

The dock is the row of icons along the bottom, with snapshot “cells” functioning as tabs

This looks pretty, and certainly gives you an instantaneous, visual representation of the tabs you have open (reminiscent to OmniWeb). But looks are about all the dock and cells can offer—it’s stuck at the bottom of the screen, so for those of us who like having tabs at the top, we’re out of luck. Keeping a handful of cells open means you are going to take major performance hits and have your resources gobbled up too—on our Opteron 256 machine, Pogo began to slow down with just three cells open, and with more than that, it became stuttery and annoying to use.

Recently I downloaded the ubuntu source for linux2.6.24-18.32, which is 8.04 latest. I need the i386 modules in ABI to finish the compile for Verdis, there there but there not the right ones. I often lose place of myself in the Linux Terminal when it comes to things like this. I need /linux2.6.24/debian/abi/2.6.24-18.32(verdis)6/i386/386.modules - but instead I only have abi/2.6.24-17.36/ - whats up with that? Right now I just found another package of linux source code labeled 2.6.24-18.32, hopefully it will have the correct modules. If anyone recognizes what I’m doing wrong, please assist me. It’s probably minor. Once I get Verdis compiled I think I will open a repo host of the latest linux source codes in order on one simple download page, so no-one else has to go through things like this. I personally think ubuntu is doing a good job, but it’s a bit jumbled and out of order for me.

My compile of Verdis crashed with some ABI modules in the linux 2.6 kernel i was compiling, I fixed it though. Found out that I didn't have the i386 modules in place. So I got that sorted out, at the reate of this compile I should have results for the next compile tomorrow morning.

Anyways that’s not what I wanted to write about, I’ve started out some new website projects on my server that you will see up and running within the next week or so.

Anyways that’s not what I wanted to write about, I’ve started out some new website projects on my server that you will see up and running within the next week or so. I’ve been working on these projects for a while. The majority came from open source projects, but they had a lot of bugs, so I fixed them and wen’t on modifying the codes to what I need. They are a number of web services and applications. The following projects are all licensed with the MIT License, some are under Creative Commons…

First off, I am starting an online magazine called “Green Society Magazine”; it’s going to be a magazine about almost everything from culture to technology to music to fashion to politics, and a lot of other things…

My second project is called “Spacegeist,” it’s really for my senior exit project but it will be another personal website of mines with a bunch of stuff on it. Not much of a service but people can register and join in on the fun. The cool part is, is that it’s an evolving website that will do what it wants… more genetic algorithms… lol

My third project is “My Green Budget,” it is an online budget/ finance management system. Its user friendly and has a lot of nice features to it. It came to me when I was reading this month’s GQ issue about the down fall on the economy, and the authors testimonial to the effects it’s been having, and how we should be looking forward to recession. The economy is not looking it’s best, so I decided for me to get ahead is to manage my spending habits and the little money I have. This will also be useful when college comes around next year… if I can afford it!!! LOL (I’m seriously thinking of joining the military to pay for college, there benefits are looking really good!!!)

My fourth project is called “FlickStreamr,” it will be a simple Wordpress blog that allows people to stream movies on it. Of course, from 3rd party sources. The blog will only post the best movie sources and screening, no bootlegs etc…

My fith project will be “the universal eye,” which is sort of like Flickr, where it allows photographers, and any body else to post photos online, it’s really simple. Sign-up, upload, and share… The coolest features of the website will be in the community part and the “grand collage.” The grand collage will be a collage of random users photos smashed and jumbled together on a web page. Hopefully it will be a application that features higher rating photos in the collage.

My sixth minor project, which is port 28 of the ZocialNET, it has came out so nice I decided it deserves it’s own domain. “ZocialOS.com” - Port 28 is an online web browse desktop environment operating system that features a kernel, and lots of cool applications. Anyone can sign up and get an account on the system. It even has an ftp, and documents etc… It’s like taking your desktop everywhere on the road.

My seventh project, “Jabber Board,” is a online chat system that will allows people to come in and chat, create rooms, and channels, pm, all that, it’s basically an online chat client and message board together. The board is phpbb3.

Those are my near future projects, so they will be a great addition to the network. Also Huntersville’s new website is almost complete and I can’t wait to have it 100% ready for them!

The final stages in the next Verdis release are coming up, and I need some logo’s and Icons for the OS, but I don’t have any ideas. I’m still working at it, hopefully I can come up with something. I’ve just been reading tons of tutorials in order to make the perfect icon and logo, but no luck. Hopefully I will come up with something. Also since the Verdis development for the first release is coming to an end, I’ve started planning of a new project, a video game. Sadly for Windows Vista only. It will be using the new DirectX Technology, I’m working on a great story full of action and adventure. It’s a game like you’ve never heard of before. The storyline and chapters and sketches will be released soon.
